Enterprise Strategic Planning at a Geographically Remote Public Hospital
THE SITUATION: The client, a 170-bed public hospital situated in a geographically remote area, is one of only three hospitals in its service region, alongside a 160-bed private community hospital and a naval hospital for military personnel. As the sole public healthcare facility in the region, local statutes mandated the development, dissemination, and implementation of a five-year strategic plan. The client engaged consultants to assist in formulating a strategic plan for 2023–2027.
THE APPROACH: Mike Arend and Viren Ahuja (Symphonie Partners) guided the client through a comprehensive strategic planning methodology that balanced immediate priorities with future success factors, ensuring the hospital's long-term viability in its unique healthcare environment. The strategic planning process, spanning 20 weeks, involved multiple on-site consultancy-led workshops, situational assessments, strategic analyses, and research. Mr. Arend and Mr. Ahuja facilitated an in-depth assessment of the client's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). Through their facilitation, the hospital revisited and updated its foundational Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Core Values.
THE SOLUTION: The resulting Five-Year Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap that provides broad strategic direction and supports key institutional decisions. Leveraging the deep industry knowledge of Mr. Arend and Mr. Ahuja, the plan outlines the current healthcare situation in the service region and emerging trends expected to impact the hospital over the next 5-10 years. Most importantly, the strategic plan delineates actionable goals, objectives, and initiatives to address current and emerging challenges, ensuring the long-term viability of this geographically remote public hospital.
